Take off into a world of your own and discover the Illawarra Region on one of the many self drive tours that take you on a journey of discovery and wonder.
In Illawarra there are many tourist drives and scenic road trips that let you explore at your own pace. The itineraries are here to help you get started with tips on where to stay, what to see, where to eat and the best time of year to travel.
One of the best drives to do is the Grand Pacific Drive from Sydney to Wollongong.
The first leg is from Sydney to the Royal National park, head south out of Sydney on the Princes Highway and weave through beautiful Royal National Park, the world’s second oldest. There are great beaches to stop at for a quick surf or to simply take in the stunning scenery.
From there head to Helensburgh, check out the Symbio Wildlife Gardens where you can pat, cuddle or feed all sorts of furry, feathered or finned animals.
After that it’s great to head further south to Stanwell Park, set in pristine bushland overlooking the sea. Some incredible views and picnicking spots here and if you left in the morning it would be a fantastic spot for lunch.
Head from Stanwell Park down to Austinmer and drive over the dramatic Sea Cliff Bridge, which hugs the coastline between Coalcliff and Clifton. The bridge projects out over the ocean and is an experience unto itself.
After that it’s an easy, scenic drive down to Wollongong. Pass through Thirroul and Bulli and along the majestic coastline and stop in at Wollongong for your overnight stay. There’s great accommodation and it’s not too hard to find a place with sea views for the following sunrise.
Enjoy some of the nightlife, there’s plenty of clubs, pubs, restaurants and cafes to choose from.
From there, in the morning after a scrumptious breakfast, the majestic South Coast is your oyster, head down to nearby Shellharbour, back up to Sydney or just keep going south and exploring the great state.
After Shellharbour if you hug the coast, you’ll discover Shoalhaven, a place of great natural beauty and rustic charm where you’ll find lots of things to see and do. Check out our Guide for that area: http://guidetoshoalhavenandsouthernhighlands.com.au/.
Further south you’ll find wilderness and natural beauty waiting to be explored, state treasures like Eden and Pambula are a traveler’s delight. Visit our guide for that area: http://guidetofarsouthcoast.com.au/
