Residents of the Illawarra ‐ mark Sunday 20 October down as an important date!
The Pavilion Kiama and surrounding showgrounds will be transformed into an environmental extravaganza called Future Fest Illawarra.
Kiama Council is partnering with the Illawarra Mercury and the Minnamurra Lions Club to bring residents of the Illawarra together to celebrate World Environment Day with a full day of events consisting of a Smart Living Expo; environment and sustainability related talks, kids activities; a Dog Agility Show; and a cooking demonstration by a former Masterchef contestant.
Last year’s event was extremely popular, attracting 40 exhibitors, including local Illawarra businesses who displayed their sustainable products and services as well as a vast array of not‐for‐profit organizations who provided information on their programs.
Kiama Council’s Waste Management Officer, Josephine St John, said, ‘Illawarra Future Fest is once again going to be a mammoth celebration and sharing of all things local and environmental.”
“We’ve secured a number of well‐known identities, including ABC Radio’s gardening guru John Gabriel and Top 24 Masterchef Australia 2012 Series 4 Contestant, Dalvinder Dhami, to join our line up of special guests who will give talks on everything from fruit and vegie in your backyard, sourcing and cooking with local produce, all you need to know about frogs, and sustainable living practices.
Dalvinder Dhami, who competed in last year’s famed cooking contest, Masterchef Australia, where she showcased her Sinaporean North Indian heritage cuisine, will officially open the event with Kiama Mayor Brian Petschler. Dalvinder will also demonstrate her culinary skills by cooking up some exciting recipes utilizing local produce. Participants will have the opportunity to sample her dishes and grab the recipes!
Future Fest Illawarra’s Smart Living Expo will bring together the region’s ‘green’ businesses and not‐for‐profit organisations at The Pavilion Kiama to show Illawarra households how their products and services can help them adapt to a new carbon economy, and reduce their consumption, environmental footprint and their bills. Businesses interested in joining the Expo are invited to download an exhibitor kit from www.kiamasphere.com.au.
The Smart Living Expo will also offer visitors native plant giveaways, demonstrations on backyard gardening, as well as dog agility trials, Bokashi Composting demonstrations, and the chance to find out more about Kiama’s Community Garden.
In the foyer, children will be delighted with the Kiama Council Library “Activities Corner” where they can listen to an array of stories and get crafty with hands on activities.
Josephine St John said, “We welcome everyone to come along to Illawarra Future Fest. There you will be able to discuss, see, hear, touch, taste and experience the best that our region has to offer, to help you take the next steps in your sustainable living journey”.
Entry to Future Fest Illawarra is by gold coin donation.
