In Illawarra you could go in the other direction and head for the hills, there are some awesome day trips to many of the famous quaint and charming towns of the Sutherland with their sprawling dairy farms and picturesque meadows. Stop at the Wildlife Park to feed kangaroos and hold koalas.
Perhaps head camping on the spectacular landscapes of the Royal National Park and work your way up the coast getting there. Discover seaside mining towns like Thirroul on your way through.
Take a trip on the Grand Pacific Drive, even just driving on this renowned route is a scenic experience in and of itself. Stop at the big lookouts like Stanwell Tops and Bald Hill and make sure to bring the camera for Seacliff Bridge.
Even pack the rods, reels and an esky and head off on a fishing expedition on one of the innumerable jetty’s that populate the coast north and south of Wollongong.
